Balatan

History

‘Sitio Siramag’, this was the old name of the town now known as Balatan. Part of ‘Siramag’ faces the South China Sea, and shares a coastline of the Ragay Gulf. It is located in the eastern part of Rinconada, and bounded by the towns of Bula, Bato, and Nabua.

‘Siramag’ was part of the town of Nabua dating back to the time when Nabua was founded as a town in the mid-1500’s until the advent of the modern Philippine history.

In 1951, then Cam. Sur Provincial Board Member Gregorio Balatan, Sr. proposed the partition of the town of Nabua into 2 municipalities: Nabua and Balatan to better address the needs of the community of ‘Siramag’. The proposal met with approval from the provincial board, and under Executive Order No. 485 signed by then Pres. Elpidio Quirino on December 3, 1951, the town of Balatan officially came into existence.

Don Gregorio Balatan, Sr. thus founded the town, and became its first mayor. He also established the Balatan Institute as the  first center of learning in the area.

Balatan celebrates its annual town fiesta on the 27th of June. Festivals celebrated are the Pintakasi on February 18, and the Pagkamundag (Birth) on December 1-3.
