UP Centennial Celebrations
COMMEMORATING THE HISTORY OF PALMA HALL AS PART OF THE UP CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS
As part of the University of the Philippines Centennial celebrations this year, the History Department of the College of Social Science and Philosophy of UP Diliman in cooperation with the PI SIGMA Fraternity Alumni Association Inc. (PSFAA Inc.), unveiled brass markers in historical locations at Palma Hall (formerly called Arts & Sciences Building or AS as usually referred to by UP students) last February 14, Thursday, in UP Diliman, Quezon City.
Palma Hall (AS Building) played a colorful and significant part in the history of UP Diliman, - often the epicenter of student activism in the 70’s and the 80’s.
The 9 historical markers are located at the following areas of Palma Hall :
A.S. STEPS
A.S. LOBBY AND MURAL (MANANSALA)
A.S. CANTEEN ("BASEMENT")
A.S. 2ND FLOOR LOBBY
MURAL (UP ARTISTS CIRCLE)
(SPECIAL MENTION OF PI SIGMA AND OTHER ORGS)
UP ANTHROPOLOGY MUSEUM
A.S. ROOFTOP/DILIMAN COMMUNE
DZUP
A.S. WALK/A.S. HILL/GREENHOUSE
The historical markers were donated by the PI SIGMA Fraternity Alumni Association, Inc. (PSFAA Inc.) which was founded in UP Diliman in 1972. Today, members of the Fraternity are present in various engagements – corporate and business, academe, media, government, legal, police and military, medical, IT and engineering, the arts, non-governmental organizations, and cause-oriented groups.
The ceremonial unveiling was led by the University of the Philippines System President Dr. Emerlinda Roman, UP Department of History Chairman, Dr. Ferdinand Llanes, College of Social Sciences & Philosophy Dean Dr. Zosimo Lee together with other officials of CSSP and the University, and the PI SIGMA Fraternity Alumni President Mr. Jay M. Dimaiwat, and Chairman, Mr. Manuel Guzman.
Dr. Llanes in his opening speech said that commemorative markers are important because they give people “a sense of place”. For her part, Dr. Roman said that the project undertaken by the History Department and the PI SIGMA Fraternity alumni was very commendable. “ I wish that all the buildings would have historical markers as part of the UP Centennial”, Dr. Roman added.
Mr. Jay Dimaiwat, a senior corporate executive of Nestle Phils, and the President of the PI SIGMA Fraternity Alumni Association (PSFAA) Inc. shared that this project is just one of the undertakings being planned by the PI SIGMA Alumni Board for the UP Centennial. “I’m also calling on all UP alumni organizations to take active part and contribute in whatever way to the year-long Centennial celebrations”, he added.
